The topic is related to creating a duplicated copy of\u00a0 DB from production \u00a0to Development \u00a0using rman<\/strong>.
\nThe below steps are applicapable in 9i,10g and 11g.In 11g there are some new methods for creating duplicate DB \u00a0which I will be\u00a0covering \u00a0in coming topics<\/p>\n

The database names used here<\/p>\n

database names:<\/p>\n

Primary Database SID:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 PROD\u00a0 server RAC1
\nDuplicate Database SID:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 DEVEL server RAC2<\/p>\n

Steps involed\u00a0
\n<\/u><\/strong>1.\u00a0 Backup the primary database.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0 Determine how much disk space will be required.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 Ensuring you have enough space on your target server.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0 Making the backup available for the duplicate process.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0 Creating the init.ora & administration directories for the duplicate database.<\/p>\n

6.\u00a0 Ensuring SQL*NET connections to primary database and RMAN catalog are working.<\/p>\n

7.\u00a0 Execute the RMAN script<\/p>\n

1. Backup the primary database
\nBefore creating a duplicate database, we must create a backup of the production DB including archivelogs also.Here i have used backup media as disk\u00a0 and i am not using a recovery catalog DB<\/p>\n

connect to the target database and take a fresh\u00a0 backup<\/p>\n

[oracle@RAC1 backup]$ export ORACLE_SID=PROD
\n[oracle@RAC1 backup]$ rman target \/<\/p>\n

RMAN> run
\n2> {
\n3> allocate channel d1 type disk;
\n4> allocate channel d2 type disk;
\n5> backup format ‘\/oracle\/backup\/df_prodt%t_s%s_p%p.bak’ database;
\n6> sql ‘alter system archive log current’;
\n7> backup format ‘\/oracle\/backup\/df_archive%t_s%s_p%p.arc’ archivelog all
\n8> release channel d1;
\n9>\u00a0 release channel d2;
\n10> }<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0 Ensure enough space is available on the target server for Db and backup pieces<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 Ensuring you have enough space on your target server.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0 Making the backup available for the duplicate process.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 copy\u00a0 the database from source server to target server<\/p>\n

5.Creating the pfile\u00a0 file\u00a0 for the duplicate database<\/p>\n

create a pfile and add the below contents\u00a0 and start the DB in nomount mode<\/p>\n

\u00a0 Add\u00a0 the conection descriptors in the tnsnames.ora and check the connectivity<\/p>\n

7.\u00a0 Execute the RMAN script
\n[oracle@RAC2 backup]$ rman target sys\/oracle@prod<\/a><\/p>\n

\n5> duplicate target database to DEVEL;
\n6> release channel C1;

The above script will do the duplication and it will open up the development database.<\/p>\n
