\"Solaris<\/a><\/p>\n

This post covers new feature ZONES<\/strong>introduced in Solaris 10, \u00a0zone is virtualized solaris operating system within Solaris. You can\u00a0install multiple Solaris Operating System (Multiple Machine) with in Single Big Machine. This will help in consolidating multiple small Solaris machine into one big machine with multiple Solaris operating system each running different application.<\/p>\n

Zones<\/strong>: is virtualized operating system created with in single instance of Solaris operating system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Container<\/strong> : Zone which includes resource management feature is called as container.<\/p>\n

Key Points for Solaris 10 Zones<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Zones can be created on any machine running Solaris 10<\/p>\n

2. Maximum number of zones (virtualised solaris o.s.) is 8192<\/p>\n

3. Master zone or base operating system is called as Global Zone<\/strong>and any zone (virtualised Solaris o.s.) created is called as Non-Global<\/strong> zone.<\/p>\n

In figure<\/strong> serviceprovider.com<\/u> is global zone<\/strong> where as apps.com<\/u> , users.net<\/u> and work.org<\/u> are Non-Global zone.<\/p>\n

4. Non global zones can only be created, managed, configured or uninstalled from Global zone.

\n5. Each zone (global & non global) is assigned a name and global zone always has zone name as global<\/strong>. Each zone is also given number ID and for global zone\u00a0ID\/zone number\u00a0is\u00a0always 0.<\/p>\n

6. Each zone has path to its root directory<\/strong> which is relative to global zone’s root<\/strong> directory.<\/p>\n

7. Root File system on non-global zone are of two type : Sparse<\/strong> and Whole root<\/strong><\/p>\n

Whole root <\/strong>file system provide more flexibility<\/strong> where as Sparse root<\/strong> zone model provide maximum configuration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

8. Dynamic resource reallocation permits unused resource to be shifted to other containers (aka zones)<\/p>\n

9. Process within same zone can communicate each other but if process in one zone\u00a0need to\u00a0communicate with process in other zone, they can do it only by\u00a0using network APIs.<\/p>\n

10. IP networking can be configured\u00a0with each\u00a0zone\u00a0having its own exclusive IP<\/strong> address or can share IP<\/strong> layer configuration and state with global zone (aka shared-IP<\/strong> zone).<\/p>\n

11. IP configuration of an exclusive-IP can only be viewed from global zone using zlogin like
\nzlogin my-zone ifconfig -a<\/strong><\/p>\n

12. You use “zonecfg<\/strong>” command to configure a non-global zone<\/p>\n

13. You use “zlogin<\/strong>” to login to a zone from global zone<\/p>\n

14. “zoneadm<\/strong>” is used to administer zone including installation, stopping, starting.<\/p>\n

15. Parameters changed using zonecfg don’t<\/strong> affect running zone, you have to restart zone using “zoneadm -z zone_name reboot<\/strong>”<\/p>\n
