OID Replication – Suppliers, Consumers, DRG, ASR/LDAP based replication

This post is overview of Terminology used in OID (Oracle Internet Directory) high availability deployment (Active-Active) – Configuring OID 11g in Multimaster Replication (ASR based) coming soon ..

a) Supplier : Directory Server in replication environment which provides updates to other directory servers is called Supplier
b) Consumer : Directory Server in replication environment to which changes are propagated from suppliers is called as consumer.
c) DRG (Directory Replication Group) : Set of OID Servers that participate in replication
d) Replication Agreement :Entry in Directory Server that represents relationship among OID servers which are part of DRG (Directory Replication Group). It resides on all OID nodes which are member of DRG.

1. Directory Server can have both read-only or read-write replicas

OID server can be both supplier and consumer

3. OID Replication can be defined/configured in following ways
3.1) Based on change propagation – Oracle Advanced Replication (aka ASR) or LDAP
3.2) Based on Direction – One-way, Two-way, Peer-to-peer
3.3) Based on Content – Full directory replication, Partial directory replication
Note* For partial directory replication only LDAP based replication is supported. Partial replication is NOT supported by Oracle Advanced Replication (aka ASR)

There are two Ways in which replication can be configure in OID
a) Oracle Advanced Replication – This type of replication uses row-level replication with asynchronous data propagation. This type of replication is also known as ASR – Advanced Symmetric Replication
b) LDAP based replication – Data in OID is synchronized using LDAP (Light Weight Access Protocol)

5. Directory Replication Group (DRG) are of following types
a) Single Master DRG– One supplier and rest other OID’s are consumers.
b) Multimaster DRG – Each OID node in DRG acts as Supplier and Consumer (aka peer-to-peer or n-way DRG)
c) Fan-Out DRG – Supplier OID node replicates data to consumer OID node and that Consumer OID node in turn supplies it to other consumer OID nodes.  (Note* Only LDAP based replication is supported with this type of DRG)
d) Multimaster with fan-out DRG– combination of both multimaster DRG and fan-out DRG

Note* If you are using 10g AS SSO (aka OSSO) then ASR based replication is mandatory. LDAP based replication is NOT supported with 10g AS SSO
