Upgrade Oracle Apps 11i with Database to 10g R2

This is in continuation from my previous blog on 28th August about upgrading database for Oracle Apps 11i. If you have not seen previous update on overview of DB upgrade for Apps 11i you can Click Here

Upgrading a Oracle Apps 11i Database is Upgrading Usual 10g Database + some additional steps which are specific to Oracle Applications 11i. So if you have already done a database Upgrade you simply need to follow metalink note # 362203.1

Database upgrade is Two Step process: First Upgrade your software i.e. your files under Database $ORACLE_HOME to provide new executables .
How to upgrade software from 8i, 9i or 10.1 to 10.2 just go to directory where you have downloaded 10.1.2.0.2 database & go to Disk1 & execute ./runInstaller . This will start Universal Installer & then you have to choose different Oracle_Home to install 10.2 software . (Check oracle database upgrade guide at http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14238/preup.htm#i1007718 ) After software Installation you have to install software for companion CD in above ORACLE_HOME i.e. one for 10.2 only.
Why I need to Install companion CD separately, I never did it earlier ? Oracle recently started shipping Ultra Search as part of companion CD which earlier used to come with database software only Apply 10.2.0.2 patch 4547817 on top of 10.1.2.0.1 base release. For instructions on How to apply patcheset 10.2.0.2 check ReadMe of patch & you again have to apply it via OUI Upgrade database Metadata Once software is upgraded you have to upgrade Metadata and option you have is via executing sql’s mentioned in upgrade guide or dbua ( database upgarde assistance tool ). Oracle Universal Installer while upgrading software also prompt you to upgrade database while upgrade software. Depending on your comfort you can choose method to upgrade database. I prefer using manual method i.e. via upgrade sql files. Now apart from upgrading database there are some pre upgrade & post upgrade steps specific to oracle applications 11i & follow them as mentioned in metalink note # 362203.1 some are option & some are compulsory . I want to discuss Native Compilation in Oracle 10 g database but because of time constraints I will discuss it some other time.

From now onwards slowly I will move on Advanced Apps DBA tasks like

Adding extra Node in Applications 11i
Implementing SSL with Apps 11i webserver
Disaster Recovery Implementation
Configuring 10g Application Server with E-Business Suite 11i
Don’t forget to leave comments and if you have any doubts in Apps 11i mail me at atul_iiit@yahoo.com or post here as comment.

Hi Atul,
I really enjoy your blog and like to read more about apps dba. I have one suggestion which i think might be helpful. It seems like you are touching too many topics and it might be harder for u to keep updated, so i would suggest to start with one topic and finish it to the end and take on next topic. For example, if u start load balancer finish it and may be move to concurrent manager.

thanks

Sudip ,
Thanks a lot for your feedback.

I can understand that you want to read from start till end about a topic but sometime its boring for me as well for readers too much on same topic .

I have noticed that I loose interest if I write continuously on single topic for 3-4 days.
I tried experimenting writing on same topic CPU patches on 9 & 10th Oct.

So what I have done is listed related topic in order in left menu bar .

Keep posting feedback & comments to improve this blog .

Incase you have implemented IMAP4, please do let me know about your experiences.

Harshita,
I think IMAP4 is requirement for Workflow Notification Mailer .

Are you looking for implementation Doc or Just Experience of implementing it .

Hi Ramana,
I have done it with 10g Application Server but not with Apps. In 10g AS I don’t see any issues but yeah RAC in apps is not certified on OCFS , its only certified on ASM

Hi Atul,
We are in the process of upgrading Apps11i database from 9.2.0.6 to 10gR2. I have two questions:
1. What is ASM? is it mandatory configuring ASM while upgrading to 10GR2
2. How to upgrade database using exp/imp method with out disturbing the existing database? Which method is good for upgrade?

Sweta

ASM is Automatic Storage Management feature in database . To know more about ASM check http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/asm/index.html

2. Upgrade database using exp/imp trust me I never saw anyone upgrading via Imp/Exp , What you can do is install 10gR2 software & then Install separate database & exp from 9i & imp to 10g r2 complete database .

Better would be install 10gR2 software & then upgrade.

I don’t understand why you want to use exp/imp & why you don’t want to disturb existing database .

Thanks in advance,

Hi Atul,

I have upgraded my database to 10g, during implemented autoconfig, I have generated appsutil.zip file and copied to Oracle home and unzipped, and generated context file, ran autoconfig. Question is, do I have to apply any latest autoconfig patch to get it work for 10g?, adchknls.pl script is looking for $ORACLE_HOME/nls/data/9idata directory, which doesn’t exist any more, hence autoconfig is failing, and clone can not be done.

Thanks in advance,
Suresh.

Hi Atul,

Could you help finding a syntax that is used to expire a db user password after N number of days also, not re-using old password.

Also for password changing intervels.

Thanks in advance,
Suresh.
