what is APPS listener ? why it is used?

APPS Listner is different from Database listener. It is basically RPC listner and is used for various purpose checking log and out file for Concurrent request is one of them.
Check the 8.0.6_HOME/network/admin//listner.ora and you will be able to see entries related to FNDFS and FNDSM
Also check the file adalnctl.txt located at $COMMON_TOP/admin/log and you will see the log file of APPS listner.

adpatch is the utility thru which you apply patch to Oracle application and opatch is the utility thru which you apply patch to Oracle database.

Further to Amit’s answer adpatch is located in $AD_TOP/bin on application tier (applmgr)
and opatch is under $ORACLE_HOME/OPatch on database (oracle)
Further more,
1. Can I merge APPL_TOPs?
2. What is a “shared APPL_TOP”?
3. What is a “shared application tier file system”?

-Yes you can merge APPL_TOP. That is when you reduce the number of nodes.
-Shared APPL_TOP- APPL_TOP and COMMON_TOP are shared
-Shared Application Tier files system- APPL_TOP,COMMON_TOP,iAS and 8.0.6 are shared.
