Oracle Apps R12 File System Changes

Sometime back I discussed about R12 release dates & few major changes at Click here to check R12 release date and few changes in R12 . In today’s post I am going to cover File System changes in R12 and talk about new TOP (INSTANCE_TOP) in Application Tier.

If you are familiar with Oracle Apps 11i , you can easily understand picture on your right. This is file system for 11i with various TOP’s , APPL_TOP, ORA_TOP, COMMON_TOP, DB_TOP and DATA_TOP. With Multiple Middle Tier configuration came shared APPL_TOP (only APPL_TOP used to be shared ) . After shared APPL_TOP came shared Application Tier (All three TOP’s on Application Tier, APPL_TOP, ORA_TOP and COMMON_TOP were shared across servers). With this came challenge of configuration files which are specific to a server mainly iAS & 806 configuration file. If you have configured Shared Application Tier (sharing ORA_TOP as well) in 11i then this problem was overcome by creating conf directory in COMMON_TOP.

In Oracle Apps R12, You can see new TOP called INSTANCE_TOP in Application Tier. This TOP will now hold any configuration files (specific to that server) , Certificates (If SSL is enabled SSL Certificates & any other certificates specific to that server) and related log files or pid files (for Apache or any other process). In diagram tops with <>ST can be shared across servers (Shared Tier) and INSTANCE_TOP will be specific to Server.

Next three pictures are taken from Ivo Dujmovic’s presentation at Oracle Open World “Deep Dive: Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 New Technology Stack“. These Pictures are self explanatory & will help you in understanding Oracle Apps R12 File System.

Subbu,
There are three oracle_home one for database 10.2 one for iAS webserver 10.1.3 and final one for 10.1.2 for Forms Reports. These three have different binaries & can’t share same oracle_home . Moreover what so ever is latest certified with Apps is introduced in R12 .

I hope I have cleared your doubt if not kindly elaborate your question

Question – If I am running linux and want to deploy a shared file system for the apps tier NOT THE DATABASE – what options do I have besides NFS – I tried ocfs2 and it looks like Apache 10.1.3 has issues….

Tim there are third party software sharing (NetApps is one of them or may be veritas) . Can you share issues you are facing in Apache in ocfs2 (Its better to keep pid file & scoreboard file on apache on local drive for better performance)

Hi Atul,

If I understand it correct, the new Instance_Top in Rel 12 will contain config & log files that used to be a part of appl_top or comn_top in previous releases. If that is right, can you provide any info, or direct me to a link or document, that covers which files/directories will move from old appl_top or comn_top to the new instance_top?

Regards,
Sunil

You have to apply patches specific to india localization. Check in metalink for india localization patch or check with Oracle support

Hi,

I need following clarifications. can u pls.help.

E-Biz 11i structure of appltop
==============================
/prodapps – mount point
under this /prodapps5
there is prodappl – $APPL_TOP
prodora – $ORACLE_HOME &
$IAS_ORACLE_HOME
prodcomn – $COMMON_TOP
so directories are
/prodapps/prodappl
/prodapps/prodora
/prodapps/prodcomn

How the above structure available in R12?

Can u elaborate with some example.

Thanks in advance.
