Upgrade Oracle Apps 11i to R12/12i (12.0.4) – Key Points

This post covers overview/top level steps to upgrade Oracle Applications (E-Business Suite) 11i (11.5.8,11.5.9,11.5.10) to R12/12i (12.0.4).
This post is useful to understand upgrade from Apps DBA point of view and does NOT cover any functional steps in upgrade process.

For step by step Oracle R12/12i upgrade process follow R12 Upgrade Guide here   and R12 Installation Guide Here

If you want to know what is changed in R12 (like technical difference between 11i & R12 Click Here or new TOP INST_TOP click here )

If you are already on R12 (12.0.0, 12.0.1, 12.0.2 or 12.0.3) and wish to upgrade to 12.0.4  Check Steps Here

Key points with regard to upgrade

– You can upgrade to R12/12i (12.0.4) ONLY from release 11.5.8, 11.5.9.X or 11.5.10.X (For any previous release like 11.5.7 , upgrade them to 11.5.10.2 first)

– You can upgrade database to version 10.2.X during upgrade (11.5.8, 11.5.9.X, 11.5.10.X) or BEFORE R12 upgrade (only for 11.5.9.X and 11.5.10.X)

.
Upgrade is broadly divided in to three steps
Preupgrade Step (lay down file system for R12 using rapidwiz/RapidInstall)
Upgrade Step (Upgrade database to 10gR2 (if not already upgraded), apply R12.AD.A on R12 APPL_TOP and apply 12.0.4 patch database portion only)
Post Upgrade step (Run rapidwiz/RapidInstall one more time to configure and start services on R12)

.

A. Pre-Upgrade Process
1.Layout file system for R12 using rapidwiz with option as upgrade.

Run rapidwiz from R12 software >> Select option “Upgrade to Oracle Applications Release 12”  (Check Figure)

R12 upgrade I

In Select Upgrade Action screen select “Create Upgrade File System” (Check Figure)
Upgrade R12 II

Follow further screens and installer will install R12 file system (This step will NOT configure and start services in R12, It will only install R12 files)

Note* There are other preupgrade steps as well like migrate backup, TUMS (optional), OATM, convert to multi org, gather stats and functional preupgrade steps (Detailed step by step upgrade doc coming soon …)

B. Upgrade Process
2.Migrate database to 10gR2 – This step is required if you have not upgraded your database with 11i itself. Use ORACLE_HOME (10.2 on database tier) which came as part of R12 upgrade (Create Upgrade file system above in preupgrade step)

 Also check following Metalink Notes

403339.1 – Oracle 10g R2 Database preperation Guidelines for Oracle E-Business Suite R12 Upgrade
396009.1 – Database initialization parameters for Oracle apps R12

3. Put your Apps into database in to maintenance mode
4.Run adpatch 6604842 (on R12 appl_top, environment variable at this stage should point to R12 APPL_TOP and ORACLE_HOME in application tier should point to FORMS (10.1.2) in R12) to upgrade AD product of R12 to 12.0.4 (Patch 6604842 is available as R12.AD.A)

5. Run 12.0.4 patch 6394500(u6394500.drv ) which is under $AU_TOP/patch/115/driver (on R12/12.0.4 APPL_TOP). Note* You have to apply this patch on 12.0.4  APPL_TOP.

Apply this with nocopyportion and nogenerateportionas copy and generate portion is already available as part of R12 install done above in preupgarde step.

Apply/Upgrade to 12.0.4 using

adpatch options=nocopyportion,nogenerateportion

6.  Disable maintenance mode

C. Post Upgrade Process
Database and database listener should be up at this stage.

7. Run Rapid Install one more time (with different option check figure) to configure and start services on R12/12i.

Run rapidwiz one more time
Select option “Upgrade to Oracle Applications Release 12”  (Check Figure)

R12 upgrade I

In Select Upgrade Action screen select “Configure Upgraded Release 12 Instance” (This select is different from selection in Pre-Upgrade Step)

R12 Upgrade III

Change file name as shown in figure to your new $APPL_TOP/admin/$CONTEXT_NAME.xml (R12)

There are other finishing tasks which are out of scope of this post like backup, reset password, setup client machines (java plugin), printers, workflow notification mailer and various functional steps

2-dose we create another oracle_home for R12 or we use the exist 11i oracle_home?

Does we create another oracle_home for R12 or we use the exist 11i oracle_home?

As a part of first runInstaller you lay down file system for R12 (You can’t use same oracle_home on middle tier)

Ashraf,
10.2.0.2 is certified with 12.0.4 (just double check from certification matrix) and if this is certified 10.2.0.2 is enough

Hi,
I would like to add.
Should I run the rapidwiz first as mention here pointing to new R12 $APPL_TOP/admin choosing the upgrade to oracle R12 home.
2.Docc says you need to create the new xml file
perl /bin/admkappsutil.pl then copy to the database server and generate the contextfile.I am little confuse here.

1- is there any other pre-requsite the technology stack

2- Should we upgrade first to 11.5.10 , then Oracle 12.0.x or we can do straight upgrade

1- is there any other pre-requsite the technology stack

No (database upgrade to 10g is enough rest techstack upgrade will come as part of 11i to R12 upgrade), just take care of client side (from Jinitiator to Java Plugin)

2- Should we upgrade first to 11.5.10 , then Oracle 12.0.x or we can do straight upgrade
to release 12i ,

You could directly go from 11.5.9 to 12.0.X

3- what version of release 12i is most stable and recommended .

12.0.4

now we are going to upgrade to 12.1.1 ..
What are the steps actually required to migrate:-
1-Database no need to migrate [ at least certified with 12i]
2-on Application Tier , It need to install some Patch and TUM Scripts ..
3-Rapid Install on the same version and same oracle home …
we have minimal customization, can we make a fresh installation of 12i only??

Hi,
I am in the process of upgrading Oracle EB11i(11.5.10) to EBS R12(12.1.1).

I am following Oracle Applications Upgrade Guide Part# E14010-01.

I have done everything till upgrading DB to 10g R2.

The main step after DB upgrade is to Apply R12 Upgrade Driver Patch 7461070 (R12.AD.B.1).

As per the Readme of patch 7461070, I have to run Patch Appln Assistanct (PAA)

When I run PAA it gives me errors.

xecuting begin :value := ad_manual_step_object.is_step_already_done(‘ad_offcycle_warnings’,’120.1′); end;
Error in executing SQL: ORA-06550: line 1, column 18:

Hi,

We want to upgrade from 11.5.10.2 to Rel 12.1. The database is already on 10.2.0.4. Can you give me the step by step for the upgrade process.

Basically I’m confused at the database step. As Since I do not have to upgrade the db, is there any option in the Rapidwiz that selects the existing database instead of installing a different Oracle Home.

Thanks,
Jay

Reply
Atul Kumar says April 20, 2010

If you are already on 10.2.0.4 and if 10.2.0.4 is certified with 12.1 then follow above steps – ignore database part from above.

Check above steps agaion carefully – You need to apply u driver to upgrade schema in exisiting database.

These steps with step by step guide to upgrade 11i to R12 is covered in our online training here

you input highly appreciated.

@ Khaled,
To validate upgrade from technical side follow below checks

1. See if you can login
2. Check if you can open forms
3. Submit concurrent request and check output and log file
4. Check display by running a concurrent request whose output is of type PDF
5. Check any other key business process

and finally ask business team to test.

One Q.?
how to migrate 11i apps with dual node installation to R12 …specific to primary applications node configuration and secondary application node and “services”

Ans 1: You can decide where you want to keep your services , if you want to retain same service model as in 11i i.e. database and CM on node1 and forms/reports/web on node2 then follow select “Batch Processing Services” on node1 and Root Service, Web Entry Point Services, Web Application Services on node2

To upgrade from 11.5.10.2 to 12.1.3, You don’t need to apply latest family patches for each modules.

Apply patches to only modeules which you are using (again latest patchset is not mandatory )

Hi,

I am doing the upgrade from 11.5.10.2 to R12.1.1.
I have started the rapidwiz as ORACLE user and found that the application files structure of R12.1.1 is created as ORACLE user. I specified the applmgr as the application tier user in the Primary Application Nodes Configuration Screen, even then the folders of application stack is created as Oracle user.

Kindly let me know what should I do. Also let me know which user should start the rapidwiz.

The applmgr user does not have write permission on database tier hence I had to use the Oracle user.

In section A. Pre-Upgrade Process,

Can we run the rapidwiz with “Upgrade to Oracle Applications Release 12” well in advance when the existing 11i application is up and running (I mean before the cutover)?

The idea is to reduce the down time. Do you think this step will change any configuration in 11i?

Reply
Abuzaid says February 27, 2012

I believe This is tasks not affect at current 11i before,

Reply
Atul Kumar says February 27, 2012

@ Abuzaid,
You can use staged application tier concept to reduce downtime .

In staged application tier , clone ens 11i to another machine with same mount points and ports /sid as prod (11i). Then upgrade this cloned environment to R12. You now throw away database node of cloned environment and used application tier (now R12) to ebs just before upgrade.

Now during upgrade (actual production) you just upgrade database part (use already upgraded application tier so no need to apply upgrade patch for application tier component) . This process will reduce downtime.

Check if 11i is supported with 11gR2 and if Yes then you can upgrade EBS or Database in any order i.e.

First Upgrade Database and then 11i to R12 or vice versa

Hello everyone

We have EBS 11.5.10.2 and 10.2.0.3 database on HP-UX.
How do i upgrade to R12.1.3 and 11.2.0.3 database on Linux. So basically this is a cross platform migration. Can some one please outline steps for the EBS to R12.1.3

Thanks

Hi Atul,

I have a very simple questio. When performing the upgrade from 11.5.10.2 to 12.1.1 should I point the R12 APPL_TOP to 11.5.10 APPL_TOP ? Or the upgrade process does install a new APPL_TOP and I no longer need the 11.5.10.

Thanks a lot.

Just to provide more data to my question:

11.5.10.2 APPL_TOP – /Ebs/appl

12.1.1 APPL_TOP – /AppEBS/appl/apps_st

Or I have to point the R12 APPL_TOP to /Ebs/appl ?

Hi Atul,
I have few questions. I need to upgrade and migrate our system from 11.5.10.2 to R12.1.3, Currently our system is running on HP-UX and it will be migrated to Linux platform. How to determine what all patches I need to apply in our existing 11iCU2 system before the upgrade? Also how to determine what all patches I need to apply in the R12 env in preinstall mode before running the upgrade driver?

Hi Atul,

I have a question.
We check opportunity migration a custom schema to 12.2 with Online Patching standards.
Do you know the automatic way to do it?

Thank you,
Slava
